Every girl need girlfriends. As you get older your priorities change, you meet someone, get married, have babies and get, well really really busy. Gone are the days when I had endless time to go out with my girlfriends, get all dressed up, drink cocktails and then spend Sunday recovering !! Now life is different, but in a good way. But it is still important to make time for these moment with your girlfriends. Whether it is catching up for a quite coffee after the kids are in bed, having a quiet phone call while your husband plays with the kids or having a girls night out (like I did last night !!). Yes we are all tired, myself included but honestly once you push past that initial feeling that you would rather go the bed and have a sleep you realize you are having fun !!
There is the ultimate danger when becoming a mum of truly losing yourself. You can end up at a dinner party and realize the only thing you have talked about all night is your child’s sleep routine or how many teeth they have. And that conversation is important and it is the most important part of your life but there is also a whole other world out there, I try to make an effort when chatting with my girlfriends to talk about their jobs, wedding plans, house renovations and plans for the future : ) It is a nice change from kindy and nappy change talk.
There is no medal at the end when your children leave the nest for completely devoting yourself to them hence losing all of your friends and the other part of you that is not a mum. For my own sanity it is key to catch up with my longest and dearest friends. These wonderful women have been in my life for about 17 years. We are all now busy with our own exciting plans, but we still have an amazing connection, a friendship that has spanned many years. I am so glad I pushed past the tired feeling and went out last night, I encourage you to do the same the next time you have the opportunity. You come home feeling amazingly refreshed and ready to be an even better mother than you were yesterday : )
